Rats become very suspicious when their known environment is disturbed or subjected to structural changes. In case of unusual activities such as large scale disinfection or culling on a farm with an epidemic outbreak it must be expected that rats leave the area. This leads to an increased risk of pathogen-carrying vagabond rats spreading the disease to previously unaffected farms. This is to be prevented by intensifying perimeter rat control around farm buildings. All bait stations should be filled with 200 g bait and monitored twice a week. |

It should be considered that pest control officers may not be permitted to enter farms within the prohibited area, and the farmer may not be allowed to shop at the agro-dealer. Therefore, when facing an epidemic situation, keep sufficient rodenticide baits on stock. |
